Mu Lowdown: 10 times America's Sex Offender Registries were used with lethal effect

Levi Axtell was celebrated in his community for the grisly vigilante murder of a 77 year old justice-impacted individual with a moose antler. While in Axtell's case, registry data was not used to locate his target, many others demonstrate that registries have considerably increased the risk of vigilante justice for registered persons and their relatives

Mu Lowdown article by Jim Burton.

America is well known for its uniquely punitive Sex Offender Laws, and cruel practice of incarcerating offenders (violent or otherwise) indefinitely after they have served their time.

In the 1990s, America began to ramp up deployment of one of its great social experiments, one that began many decades previous in 1940s California. Released sex-offenders were suddenly subject to public registration requirements in many states. As for the threat of vigilantism, released sex offenders were to be America's Guinea Pigs, for what was to become one of the most horrific failures among its many reckless attempts at social-engineering.

You may be forgiven for thinking that registry-abetted murder is a theoretical possibility raised by a select few ivory-tower civil rights scholars. But in fact, registry murders are a reality, with tens of registrants and their relatives having already been slain by deranged civilians using information directly gleaned from state-sponsored registries.

Full disclosure, and content warning - in this article, I will document 11 of the most chilling examples of crazed American antis taking justice into their own hands, 10 of them fatal. They all thought they were doing God's work in service of children's "innocence", but in reality, they were perpetuating terrorism against an unsuspecting American public. Reader discretion is advised.

    11. TRANT (2004)

Numbered 11 of 10 because his attempt was unsuccessful, the Trant case can be seen as a harbinger of the cruel justice that was soon to be visited upon the American public by anti-sex vigilantes in the coming decades. Trant attempted to murder two registrants whose names and addresses were publicly listed by the government. He stabbed one man and launched arson attacks at two buildings where at least seven registrants lived.

"I don't want people to steal the souls of little kids", Trant said. "I'm doing 30 years for something I think is morally justified. [...] I hope I've done a service to the community [...] These guys are sexual terrorists."

For his own acts of terror, Trant was sentenced to 10-30 years in New Hampshire State Prison.

    10. MARSHALL (2006)

Famous enough to merit its own Wikipedia article, the case of Stephen Marshall lit up the media in 2006. Marshall drove from Nova Scotia (Canada) to Maine and murdered two registrants, shooting one who had been involved in a consensual relationship with a 15 year old girl, when he answered the door, and the other in his sleep. After his suicide, authorities searched Marshall's computer and found an animation of Jesus armed with an assault rifle while knocking on someone's door, as Marshall had converted to Christianity shortly before the killings. His references to "pedophiles" as "scums of the Earth" could have been taken fresh out the pages of an Andrew Vachss novel.

Unlike its most high-profile victims, the Maine Registry lives on.

    9. MULLEN (2006)

Michael A. Mullen confessed to the high-profile killings of two registrants in letters to the news media, expressing a desire to be executed as a symbol of retribution against the men. He said he used the sex-offender registry to find his target, and was "surprised" when he found two other sex offenders were living at the same house. Upon paying his visit, Mullen recalled "out of the three, only one showed remorse or guilt. He is the one I let go [...] I came to the conclusion that they must die [...] to drive my point home that 'WE' will protect 'our' children."

In some states, public registration has taken a McCarthy-esque turn, with police departments posting signs outside registrants' homes and posing for media selfies in front of their work

    8. OLIVER (2009)

Registrant Michael Dodele had been a free man for just 35 days when Sheriff's deputies found him lying motionless in a pool of blood in his trailer home. Local builder, Ivan Garcia Oliver was arrested, having made incriminating comments. A neighbor of his said that two days before the killing, Oliver told every house in the trailer park that he found Dodele's name listed on the public registry, and was "uncomfortable" living near him. Oliver would later sickeningly attempt to defend himself, claiming he "felt that by not taking evasive action as a father in the right direction, I might as well have taken my child to some swamp filled with alligators".

In a cruel twist of fate, and stark warning against the pitfalls of vigilante justice, it turned out that Dodele was not actually a child sex offender. He sexually assaulted adult women.

    7. DRUM (2012)

Patrick Drum, a convicted felon, admitted to stalking Gary Lee Blanton, 28, and Jerry Wayne Ray, 57 using the registry. He shot them multiple times in their homes near Port Angeles, Washington, leaving them for dead.

Ray was a carer for an elderly relative. Family Man Blanton's only offence, aged 28, was "statutory rape" (i.e. voluntary intercourse) with his girlfriend, a 17-year-old woman. Egged on by a fervent band of supporters in the courtroom, Drum said of his mindless slayings "it had to be done", callously adding that he considered the impacted families to be "collateral damage". He would have killed more, he said, if only he had not been caught.

    6. MOODY (2013)

At first, the Redneck neo-Nazi couple seemed "remorseful" for the registry-abetted gunning and stabbing to death of an ex-con and his innocent wife, but this tellingly changed when their life sentences were read out to them. "Child molesters do not deserve to live!" Jeremy Moody yelled out, leaving the courthouse, wearing handcuffs and striped prison scrubs; "had to do it over again, I'd kill more". His wife, Christine was equally remorseless, calmly stating that her target was a demon, adding "I have no regrets ... killing that pedophile was the best day of my life."

"See you perverts later," Jeremy sneered at his victims relatives as he was escorted out of the courtroom, his wife adding, "may they die also" as she was bundled into the back of a squad car.

    5. FAIRBANKS (2020)

Registrant Mattieo Condoluci, 64, was found dead inside his home. Facebook user, James Fairbanks then sent an anonymous email to the media, and later confessed, and detailed why he killed Condoluci. He claims he saw the registrant "staring at children", and was frustrated at how his community was unable to police itself. Most disturbingly, it appeared that once again, misleading legal language, "rape", used on the registry was an aggravating factor behind the murder, as well as the murderer's extremist child protectionist ideology.

    4. BANKS (2022)

Obsessed with QAnon conspiracy theories, Rory Banks created a "hit list" from which he would hatch a successful plan to slay registrant, 55-year-old Ralph Mendez. Banks set out armed with two handguns, four knives, OC spray, strobe lights, his hit list with four names and addresses. “Banks did not know any of them personally, but appointed himself judge, jury, and executioner” said the District Attorney. Banks, who had a QAnon sticker on the back of his vehicle, was always stuck to the Telegram social media app "doing research" that ultimately led him to conclude his community was plagued by sex offenders.

    3. REQUENES (2022)

A woman at a bar in Texas City accused Danny Sanders, 65 (credibly) of being a "sex offender". He was after all, on the Lone Star State's public registry following an act of "indecency" with a minor over 10 years ago.

As Sanders attempted to leave the bar, five men who had overheard, attacked him and beat him to death. Sanders suffered severe face and head injuries from being punched, kicked and stomped during a vicious and relentless attack that lasted over a minute. Taylor Christopher Requenes, 22, Ashton Coleman, 22, Christopher Gomez, 32, Dayton Booker, 22, and Antonio Figueroa, 39, all of Texas City, were the men who participated in the attack.

    2. SIMMONS (2023)

Deka Simmons, 40, was convicted of shooting to death 48-year-old Daxcimo Ceja, a registrant who previously had a relationship with a 17-year-old woman when he was 25. Simmons dismembered his body, and industrially froze the parts before transporting them to the drainage ditch where she would dump them. Prosecutor Sharon Flaherty said that Simmons killed Ceja simply because he was a registrant. Simmons, she said, "has an unrestrained hatred for anyone who would molest a child to the point where it's become a 'fixation' and 'paranoia.'"

    1. SMITH (2024)

Portez Smith had only one thing on his mind upon learning his downstairs neighbour was a registered "pedophile". He walked up to the porch of that man, 31-year-old Jesse Grover, and shot the registrant dead following a short altercation. Grover had been forced to register publicly following "lewdness" with a 14-year old. He was 21 at the time of the offence. Officers found him lying on the floor in a pool of his own blood. Despite attempts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
